Important Risks of Bariatric Surgery

Although bariatric surgery is a helpful process to use for weight loss in people who are highly obese it is important to look into the risks of bariatric surgery. Not only are there some important risks involving malnutrition over a period of time there are also some risks dealing with leaks at the site of the operation.

Gastric dumping syndrome is an important thing to watch for as well. Fortunately there are all sorts of different ways how some of these risks can be avoided.

A major part of bariatric surgery is that with the new stomach created and the redirection of the digestive system involved it can be harder for the body to be able to absorb nutrients. As a result it will be important to follow a proper multivitamin regimen as directed by one's doctor. This is important because if this diet is not followed malnutrition can occur.

Another concern deals with possible leaks at the site of the surgery. These leaks can be very disruptive to the new digestive system and can cause the surgery to become undone in some cases. This risk can be avoided if the right eating procedures are used as suggested by one's doctor.

Gastric dumping syndrome is one of the most common things to watch for with handling weight loss. This occurs when the lower part of the small intestine fills with undigested foods at a fast rate. This can cause vomiting and dizziness with diarrhea in many cases. Having a well balanced diet and watch how much food is consumed here can help to avoid this case though.

One thing to watch for when handling weight loss that cannot be avoided in all cases is the possibility of getting an incisional hernia. This is where a bulge can occur at the area of incision in the body. This can cause significant amounts of pain in the body. The use of laparoscopic repair, which is used to help with repairing tissues that have been damaged by this hernia, is very safe and can be used to help with resolving this risk if it does occur.

The last risk to consider is that while the mortality rate of this weight loss surgery is very low there are some possibilities of this occurring. The mortality rate is nearly one tenth of a percent. While this process is relatively safe there are no real guarantees that mortality will not occur.

These risks of bariatric surgery are important to look into for handling weight loss. Malnutrition and gastric dumping syndrome can occur in some people but these conditions can be avoided. Some risks cannot be avoided like incisional hernias but they can be treated properly.
